Michelle Lane–Barmapov

Michelle Lane-Barmapov was the founder of the Lane Montessori School for Autism (previously known as the Toronto Montessori School for Autism) in Toronto, Canada. This not for profit school was the first of its kind to combine Applied Behavior Analysis with the Montessori curriculum in the world.

 

In 2005, Michelle was awarded The Premier’s Award in recognition of her outstanding work in special education and Montessori.  In the fall of 2010 the school had to close due to a lack of funds.  Michelle, who attended Montessori as a child, currently works as a Lead teacher at the Montessori Country School in Milton

 

Michelle’s educational background is a bilingual (French and English) B.A. in psychology and sociology which she obtained at the age of nineteen.  She later went on to do a year of social work before leaving the field to become a Montessori teacher.  Lane received a scholar’s award for her post graduate Montessori teacher training at Sheridan College and holds and A.M.S. (Early Childhood) credential and is a certified elementary (6-9) teacher.

 


Lane’s training in Applied Behaviour Analysis (Intensive Behavioural Intervention) was with the Ontario Government (Toronto Preschool Autism Services) in addition to her work conducting workshops, parent coaching and consulting.  
Her consulting and accreditation business, now simply called Lane, offers families and professionals the opportunity to learn about the blended method and implement strategies in their own programs. Michelle created the blend of Montessori and ABA and has written a book called “Autism-A Montessori Approach” along with several program tracking manuals that have been sold to Montessori schools, clinics and families all around the world.

 


During school breaks she continues to lecture in Canada and in the US, is a published author and sits on the board of directors for Epilepsy Halton Peel Hamilton in Canada (Ontario) and Roads to Recovery in the USA (Ohio).


Before Michelle started the Lane Montessori School for Autism, she was an
accomplished singer/songwriter, beginning with the violin at the age of four and the piano at the age of nine.  She is currently working on music programs for children on the autism spectrum. 

 

Michelle is married to Oren Barmapov.  They live in Toronto and share three children, Alliyah, Amos (pronounced Ahhmose)  and Jaguan .
