Autism - A Montessori Approach was written by Michelle Lane who is the owner and founder of the Toronto Montessori School for Autism. Michelle's background is in Montessori and ABA/IBI (Applied Behaviour Analysis/IntensiveBehavioural Intervention). IBI is currently one of the most sought after treatments for children with autism and is based on Dr. Ivar Lovaas who is a scientist who developed the premier early intervention of autism treatments. From his published study in 1987 at the University of California he found that by using a discrete Trial Training (ABA-DTT) children under the age of four who received forty hours per week of IBI had a good chance of higher scores on intelligence tests. The goal in IBI with children with autism is to increase their developmental growth so that it is closer to that of a typically developing child. The manual is a combination of the Montessori curriculum with an ABA/IBI approach. At TMSA Michelle found that children made excellent improvements using this combined approach. The Montessori materials are concrete so that children learn to become more independent and confident by being in a structured environment. This four hundred page manual is ready to use with prompting information, direct and indirect aims, verbal instructions, acquisition criteria and generalization recommendations to help the child take the skills learned at school to other environments.
